Avs game potential turning point for Wings
After a six game losing streak, the Wings beat the Avalanche yet again this year 4-0. The key players got things going again, with Zetterberg tallying 2 goals and Datsyuk logging 3 assists (giving him 400 career points), Chris Osgood recorded a shutout making 18 saves. However the biggest story of the game was the injury sustained by Nicklas Lidstrom by the hit from Ian Laperriere.
After years of Wings fans fan begging for an enforcer, fans finally got to see what good an enforcer does to a team. Aaron Downey did not hesitate to seek revenge against Laperriere not once, but twice. After Downey went after Laperriere for the second time in the third period, Wings head coach Mike Babcock and Avs assistant coach Tony Granato were having a rather heated conversation, to put it lightly.
Why is this important? The Wings after a drone-like 6 game losing streak finally showed some heart. After Lidstrom went down, everyone stepped up their game which resulted in a win. Chris Chelios tallied a goal, and 7th defenseman Derek Meech logged over 20 minutes of ice time.
Just like in 1997, the final Avs-Wings game could be what sets the Wings onto a path of success in the playoffs. (Being healthy and some trades would help too)
