Holland: “It’ll be like dominos…”
For those of you doubting the action for this year’s trade deadlin, you can breathe a little easier now, as Wings GM Ken Holland promised there would be deals for sure starting as soon as tomorrow.
One determining factor eplaining this year’s “boring trade fest” (I don’t agree, but that’s the popular belief) - with only 1 trade of significance (Stillman and Commodore to Ottawa) and two minor ones by the fading Flyers (Vadermeer to Calgary; Modry from LA) - is obviously the salary cap and the general managers’ desire to maximize whatever they can get for their potential players for rent or assets they need to get rid of.
Marian Hossa is a prime example; it’s not a secret Thrashers GM Don Waddell will now trade his superstar, seeing he hasn’t been able to reach a deal with him –it was announced today– so he has to try and get the most out of Hossa, via trade, another interesting tidbit being he was actually scouting the Hamilton Bulldogs, Montreal’s AHL affiliate, tonight in a game versus the Marlies.
So yeah, GM’s are pressured into making deals at this time of year and I’m glad nobody has fallen into that trap…yet; we are less than 48 hours from Deadline Day, so buckle your seatbelts, as Kenny assures, the deadline could be action filled with deals, maybe even as soon as tomorrow:
“I think the moves will really start Monday,” Holland said.
“From my conversations, there’s the potential for some really big deals to go down. It’s going to depend on whether someone is willing to pay the price.”
“I think it’ll be like dominos. When the first one goes down, they’re likely to be others.”
Holland included his own club amongst those that could possibly make a major move.
“We’re prepared to be aggressive”.
With Sundin out of the picture now, could Holland possibly target Marian Hossa? (please Ken, we want him, not you, you have Datsyuk, we have nobody that good)
As always, times are-a-crazy!
