Wings lose yet another
Only six hours after the trade deadline, where the Red Wings aquired defenseman Brad Stuart from the Los Angeles Kings, the Wings were scheduled to play the Edmonton Oilers. After going 4-7-1 in the month of February, the Wings were looking for a win against the also injury ridden Oilers.
Heading into the 3rd period down 1-0, things weren’t looking good for the Wings. However the Wings got two powerplay goals from rookie defensemen Jonathon Ericcson and Pavel Datsyuk, to tie it 2-2 with time winding down in the third.
The game seemed to be over when Valtteri Fillpula scored late in the third off a dump in. Though coming to save the day for the Oilers was Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja, who threw the puck over the glass in the defensive zone. With the Wings top 4 defensemen injured, not only did Lilja give the Oilers the man advantage, but he also took their best penalty killer off the ice. The Oilers pulled Garon (who had an amazing night) for the 6 on 4 advantage. Fernando Pisani tied it up with less than 30 seconds left, eventually sending the game into overtime.
Like most the time, overtime resulted in a shootout. McTavish elected to shoot second, in order to get the last shot. In the end it paid off as last shooter Robert Nilsson scored the last goal to put the game away.
The Wings beaten down defense really showed last night, Brett Lebda really got hung out to dry. He simply is not top 4 material and probably never will be. Jonathon Ericcson showed some rookie mistakes, though he still had an impressive showing. He’s got quite the cannon from the point, as he scored a goal on the powerplay. His size will also help replace what the Wings lost with Fischer. Derek Meech also had a very solid showing, he was the most notable Wing on the ice, he was jumping all over the ice recording a lot of shots and creating offense. He also logged 27 minutes, only behind Brett Lebda.
