Russia beats Canada in upset

I hate Ilya Kovalchuk even more now, but congrats to Russia.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored the game tying AND game winning goal today in a 5-4 win that gave Russia the gold for the first time in 16 years. The rocket of a goal came on the power play during a penalty on Rick Nash for delay of game just minutes into overtime.

Dany Heatley was named the MVP after tallying 20 points in the tournament.

Both goalies, Nabokov for Russia and Ward for Canada, made some great saves and let in some bad goals but in the end it was Nabokov who came out victorious for his team.

It seems all good hockey teams get their moment in the sun. Looks like it’s Russia’s turn again.
By the way, if my friends to the north wish to visit their cup, we have it here in Anaheim, Ca : )

It used to be Canada was full of hockey players and whores.

Now they are no longer hockey players…. just telling it how it is.

at neednewbed.com, losing in ot at the world championship now means your out of hockey players….and last year’s ducks team was one of the most canadian teams in the league

No one in Canada takes this tournament too seriously anyway. It is more or less an event where cowardly gamblers can place low return bets on Canada winning every game. If this had been the Olympics or World Juniors however there would be a clinical depression sweeping from coast to coast. The bookies in Moscow likely cringed when their nations team won, those six and a half point odds would not be much fun paying out to ecstatic Russian hockey loyalists whom have witnessed this sort of upset before. Although I am a proud Canadian it was almost just as enjoyable to see the reaction of an uber enthused Alexander Ovechkin, singing his country’s anthem proudly out of tune. We will allow you to have this one Alex but don’t get too acquainted with success on the international stage. @ Steve F.- Rest assured
Steve that we will not be visiting our cup south of the border at all my friend, of the 23 players which comprised Anaheims championship team 18 were Canadian. The others being highly skilled Scandinavians and other Europeans. You Americans stick to sports such as Basketball where a slap on the wrist results in an abrupt stoppage of play and football which is claimed to be a tough sport within the confines of ignorant America however the lack of fist to face contact leaves me begging to differ.
    -???????? ???, ???????????? ?????? ???????.

Marvin, you are ignorant. Go outside and stop taking sports so seriously.

Marvin - Since no one in Canada takes this tournament seriously, why even team Canada decided to participate? Stupid decision….
I am glad they lost it.
team CANADA is bunch of losers in hockey! You are trying to find excuse - you found it… All Canadian stars are playing for Stanley… whatever.

Call your buddies in team Canada and tell them to do not play in championships anymore… It is really a shame to loose such tournament at home,
    right?
    Whatever dude.

    Cheers for team Russia!

Yo! Marvin or whatever ur name is. Russia won in Canada!!! I will never believe that you are not taking this seriously. Besides, what is it you take seriously? NHL? Yeap, NHL is cool but you can’t compare it to World Championship as it is not about money, rating and shit like this. And you know what? Canada lost in front of all their fans in most canadian Canada (Quebec) and it makes me feel proud of my team even more. Go Russia!!!!!

  • BayTiger said:

My 2 other cents… Brent Burns is the best between Canadian losers…. Having 3:1 and then 4:2 lead and then lost this? Marvin, this is a really good excuse for your team. I am proud for team Canada being such a team of losers! Your superstar goalkeeper did not even see last shot from Kovalchuk….

Overall, it was a great game!

  • lol said:

Are you serious, our superstar goaltender? There are many better goaltenders in Canada aside from Cam Ward, Ward had his time in the sun a few years ago but has been lackluster in the past two seasons. Yes it’s a shame that we lost but look at the Russian team, top goal scorer in the NHL, some of the fastest skaters around and some of the best players who are not part of the NHL because they’d be salary cap busters.

The Olympics is where you will see a superstar Canadian team, we will have some of the top players who are currently playing in the NHL playoffs and likely a new star goaltender in Marc-Andre Fleury. Yes Canada lost on Canadian soil, but it’s not like we haven’t also taken it on other teams home soil many times in the past. I give my congratulations to Russia as they played through adversity and their superstars turned it on when they needed to (Nabokov and Kovalchuk). I’m glad Russia has finally found a team that can work together and I truly hope they will be a force in the Olympics in 2010.

A lot of people writes that this final wasn’t so important for Canada. But then WHY are you here and discussing this not important final???
Maybe, because it WAS important. Maybe because of this fact all Canadian government came yesterday to see the real battle between two gorgeous teams?
And now, people, you are just trying to find an explanation of Canadian loss.
Russia was just better last night and I hope it’s gonna be a long rally between these two excellent teams in future.

    p.s. sorry for my English:)

  • BayTiger said:

to LOL… sure, let’s see who will be the best goaltender on Olympics. Guess what…. Team Canada will be the 4th….. just remember what I just predict, dude.

Enjoy the loss! Sorry to ruin prepared celebration…. It still could be Black Celebration…. just turn on Depeche Mode with that song,

    Nothing personal :)

You guys!!! It was a really great final, you know?! Really interesting game!! I saw it, i never worried so strongly for our team, `cause 3:1 after the 1st period was so hopelessly… Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, Morozov, Bykov and Fedorov played as the USSR team in 70`s, but game was interesting only due to the huge power of canadian team. How about New Super Series?)))

Thanks to Canada and Go Russia!!!

    p.s. sorry for my english…

I am a proud Canadian. I am sad that Canada spent the last two periods on their heels trying to contain Russia rather than staying on the offensive like in the first period. That said, I am very impressed with and a great admirer of Russian hockey. One team has to win and congratulations to Russia. They amply deserved to win.

  • Grigore said:

    Sbornaia Rossii, molodtsi !!!!!!!!!!

  • Serf Grewal said:

It was a great game. Most say that Russia got the win because of what Canada didn’t do. That’s a bit unfair. I beg to differ. Russia won because they played solid hockey and didn’t give up not because Canada didn’t do something. Well, Russia did win because Canada didn’t win, but that’s it :)

For you who are complaining about the Nash penalty in overtime, don’t forget that Canada got a goal on that exact same penalty call during the game. So even if you take away those two goals, Russia would still have won. Besides I think that Staal got away with a penalty and the subsequent goal should not have been one. All in all, Russia outplayed Canada.

But that’s okay. Remember every player and team comes to win. They don’t come here just to lose to Canada.

The Olympics are going to be fantastic. I think with Malkin in the lineup Russia is going to be a real force. And, in anticipation of what Crosby fans will say, I have little doubt that Malkin is better than Crosby. With two more years to grow into that 6′3″ frame will make Malkin a a pretty impressive player. Especially, when he won’t have to play second fiddle. He’ll just take over the way he did when Crosby was out. The only difference will be that he will be playing against Canada.

I still hope Canada wins, but I am sure looking forward to watching the game.
